What is Wegovy (semaglutide)?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weight loss drug that has been described as a "game-changer" to fight obesity and has just been approved by the FDA.  It's the first time the FDA has endorsed a medication for weight loss in almost 10 years.  

How does Wegovy (semaglutide) work?

Wegovy (semaglutide) works by mimicking a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of your brain to help suppress appetite and delay the emptying of the stomach.

Who can use Wegovy (semaglutide)?

Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater or a BMI of 27 or more and at least one health condition (such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes) related to their weight.  

How to use Wegovy (semaglutide)?

The medication is a once-a-week injectable that should be used in conjunction with diet and exercise.

How effective is Wegovy (semaglutide)?

Semaglutide and other GLP-1 antagonist medications have been used for many years as an anti diabetic medication.  Recently, it was noticed that while utilizing this medication significant weight loss occurred.  Studies were conducted and the results were truly remarkable. Over 70% of the participants lost anywhere from 15-20% of their total body weight.
